Pastels from 1988 to 2013

Master pastel artist, and longtime summer resident on Martha’s Vineyard, Irving Petlin (1934 – 2018) would each year invite friends and patrons to view his new work he had conceived of and produced on the Vineyard during the summer months. Most were completed while on the island, others would be refined once he returned to his Paris Atelier home base.
A selection of twelve pastels were shown in a historic stone walled barn which doubled as a studio on the family property in Chilmark. All but two were made in his beloved studio where he worked during the summer for four decades.
Irving had a strong spiritual connection to his Chilmark home, to the trees, the stones, the buildings, and the landscape. The selection included three pastels referencing the farm. Two, from The Farm Series, immortalize what he called the Fire Tree, (now felled) which stood protectively beside the summer fire-pit on Wayside Farm.
The Morning of the Other Window, (diptych I, 2007), 26 x 40 inches, (pictured above), frames the view from an upstairs window in the Barn overlooking the family cottage, a small outbuilding and the wider property. This perspective echoes narratives in many works drawn from the view from his 5th floor Paris Atelier window over rooftops, and is as much a composite of elements of place, memory distilled, filled with history, time, and belonging.
